I try to run Linspire development as democratically as possible. Some of you have come to me and said "Hey we dont like the desktop" some of you have come to me and said "Its my new favorite." When we started planning back in March the guys said "Hey we want to build some Alpha's with different desktops" I said as long as its not i3 or Pantheon Im good with it. So by the time Beta 1 hits in October, we will have finalized the desktop. The one constant, there will be an XFCE release of Linspire. Thats a definite. Alot of people have had issues with the XFCE Freespire build we put out, so we are building a Mate build of Freespire. Some of the problems with desktops, KDE, and XFCE are not of our doing. We are finding more and more glitches with KDE and XFCE and our fixes are being pushed out and up but it takes awhile. But so far our Mate build is getting love. Some have said its unique and pleasurable to use and we strive to differentiate ourselves from the original Linxpire Inc. and I think we have done a great job of that.

I am actually enjoying freespire xfce alpha. Looks and works great. I am using the Linspire 8 alpha on another computer and Mate is running excellent. Which ever DE you decide to use will be fine by me. I definitely will be purchasing the XFCE version of Linspire since XFCE is my favorite DE. I have been using Linspire since December and have faith that no matter what you put out will be great.

But I'll tell you already. If you use GNOME I will no longer use Linspire.

I'm currently running Linspire 7.0 SP1 and managed to upgrade KDE Plasma to KDE Plasma 5.13 without messing anything up. It's a very capable desktop. I love KDE Plasma 5.13 because it has the "icons-only task manager" widget available as an option. So using that, I've managed to make my Linspire pretty much look like Windows 7. (I used the kubuntu-backports PPA and the KDE Neon repository to upgrade Plasma to 5.13.) Even replaced the included kernel with 4.15.0-23-generic.
But yeah, I don't like GNOME either. I would take Unity over GNOME any day.
